Startup Grind is coming to Kansas City in 2013

Welcome to Startup Grind Kansas City!  Join us for Startup Grind KC’s first event on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Cremalab, a mobile and web development company in Kansas City.  We invite anyone who is interested in being inspired, educated, and getting connected with other entrepreneurs.

Startup Grind KC is a local chapter of Startup Grind, a community of founders, entrepreneurs, and business professionals looking to be inspired, educated, and connected with the smartest startup minds.  Our desire is to provide a space where individuals can share their stories (successes and failures) with other aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners for the purpose of learning and going through the “grind” in good company.  We are excited to launch another chapter, right here in Kansas City!


A Rich History


Kansas City is a perfect addition to the already amazing network of Startup Grind communities across the globe.  KC is becoming one of the most recognized cities in the United States for entrepreneurship.  In fact, it was named one of the Top 10 Cities for Young Entrepreneurs in 2011 by Under 30 CEO.  Our city has a rich and historic tradition of innovation and entrepreneurship, which has given shape to some of America’s most influential entrepreneurs, including Ewing Kauffman, Barnett Helzberg Jr., and Joyce Hall of Hallmark Cards.  Notable examples of successful ventures include Roasterie Coffee, Boulevard Brewing Company, Helzberg Diamonds, Hallmark Cards, Marion Labs (now Marion Merrell Dow), Zave Networks, and Zaarly Inc., among others.

Our city is home to the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the world’s largest foundation devoted to advancing entrepreneurship and innovation.  In addition, there are numerous mentoring organizations (Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program and PIPELINE) and several local universities (Rockhurst University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City) committed to coaching and teaching the next generation of entrepreneurs and business owners.  Kansas City also has a thriving community of startup catalysts who are building awareness and starting movements around startup companies.  These groups are made up of programmers, designers, businessmen and women, investors, educators, and other professionals that are devoting their time and effort to deploy their vocational skills and startup ingenuity in their respective industries.

Kicking it off right


At our first meeting, we will hear from Tim Barton, Chairman and CEO of Freightquote.com. Tim founded his company in 1998, and has since led the way for Freightquote.com to become one of the largest shipping companies in the US, with annualized revenues in 2012 of over $500 million.

Doors open at 6pm for networking and dinner, followed by a chat with Tim at 7pm.

Kyle is currently pursuing a Master of Accountancy at Brigham Young University. A large portion of his time is devoted to learning the ins and outs of tax accountancy, but once the books are closed Kyle can be found working on some new entrepreneurial pursuit, or working with professors on research projects.
