Tesla Model S As Cool As Advertised

In spite of the Model X unveiling this week in LA, Tesla hosted a group of car and tech entusiasts today in their Menlo Park (El Camino) showroom as Nicolas Verzeni, Powertrain Research & Development Manager hosted a technical discussion about the platform and the advantage of building an electric vehicle from the ground up.

What was really remarkable was that it was the first time I personally have sat inside the much anticipated Model S. Much of last year they had a concept car in the showroom but never the real thing. This is their second release and to be honest the first practical model. The roodster wars built for Tesla investors and the old boys club of Palo Alto. The Model S on the other hand is really stunning. The first thing that jumps out is the exterior design. It is slick and simple and has the feel of a Mercedes or BMW. It also seems incredibly compact for what's inside. Three reasonably comfortable seats in the backseat, and two rear facing booster seats in the trunk. The car could uncomfortably seat a family of seven, or an SF couple and their three dogs.

The 17' display in the middle of the console is breathtaking. It looks like six iPads were fused together and the UI was contracted out to Tony Stark. It is far and away the most impressive in-vehicle display I have ever seen. As a technology guy that was the most exciting innovation in the car. I've just never seen anything like it. According to Tesla the car can go 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. Obviously it doesn't take gas, but at $50k it is an incredible amount of car for the value. The Model S will be on display through tomorrow so get down there and check it out in person in you have time.

Best part of the trip is they hooked up Austin with a Tesla Hot Wheels.
