Stafford Masie was the CEO of Google Africa and is currently the Founder of Thumbzup, the local tech start-up behind Absa's mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) solution, the Absa Payment Pebble. Masie has been in the IT industry for over 18 years working at high positions for Telkom, Dimension Data and then Novell South Africa. Masie is one of the only South Africans who has had a working relationship with Apple Founder Steve Jobs, Google Founders Larry Page, Sergey Brin Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
On returning from studying abroad he immediately started working for Dimension Data and then Telkom. Stafford started his own consulting and engineering services company which was later acquired. Looking for further challenges he then joined a multinational enterprise software company called Novell and after 9 months in South Africa he moved to the USA where he spent 6 and a half years working at their corporate head office in Utah.
In 2003 he returned to South Africa to assume the role of country manager for Novell South Africa. In 2007 Stafford was subsequently appointed the CEO of Google South Africa and was responsible for building Google's advertising and applications business in South Africa, as well as expanding the company's strategic partnerships in the region. Stafford is now best known as the founder and CEO of Thumbzup, which is a technology company that invented the Pebble which was produced in partnership with ABSA to revolutionize smartphone banking.
He’s excited by all things technological and says tech is becoming ubiquitous. “Technology is no longer technology, it’s everything,” he says, without meaning to sound hyperbolic. “It’s no longer a niche. It’s health care, supply chain, manufacturing, banking … and the real question is how do you deal with that?” Besides being a technology and renewable energy enthusiast, Stafford is equally passionate about flying Micro-lights and single prop aircraft whenever he can…as well as diving and skiing when the weather permits.
