These unprecedented times call for unusual and new ways of doing things. For our 3rd virtual event we have decided to bring you something unusual indeed, and are delighted to introduce to you the story of Basepaws, a US-based pet genetics company!

Basepaws are pioneers in feline genetics, an area that has been understudied and underfunded for years. Cat genes still have many mysteries to be solved, and that’s where we come in. Basepaws offers the first at-home genetics test for cats, which allows owners to learn more about their cat’s ancestry, health, and habits.

The company has gathered dedicated geneticists, veterinarians, and visionaries for the purpose of helping pets live the longest, happiest, and healthiest lives possible. The entire team strives to help you get to know your cat even better because beneath all that cuteness beats the heart of a lion. Or maybe a tiger. Possibly a lynx. You get what we’re saying.

Anna Skaya is the co-founder and CEO of Basepaws. She started the company in 2016 while attending Singularity University’s (SU) Global Solutions Program, now known as the Global Startup Program.

Anna was a founding member of three prior startups with more than a decade of experience in building brands and frontier technologies. At 27 she was the CEO of Groupon Russia where she had full P&L responsibility and led a 500+ team to double-digit growth at one of the faster-growing consumer companies in the world.

Basepaws is on track for exponential growth after investments from Shark Tank (Mr. Wonderful is a huge fan), top Silicon Valley venture groups and world-known strategic companies. You can read the SingularityU case study about Basepaws to get a more detailed look at their journey from idea to impact. Anna is passionate about making the world better and using technology and science to solve the world’s biggest problems.

But of course, Anna couldn’t do this without her valuable and expert team. One team member in particular stands out; Koko the team cat & assistant to the CEO. Koko came from a local shelter in Los Angeles, loves to lay in the California sunshine, watches ‘cat TV’ and greets new employees at the lab with her cold stare. She even has her own instagram! By now you may have questions, such as:

  • How does one get from being the CEO of Groupon Russia to founding a pet genetics company in California? Or:
  • Why and how is there a market for this? Or even:
  • Would I do a DNA test for my pet?

Tune in to our Fireside Chat with Anna Skaya on Tuesday, 05 May at 20:00 (CEST), 11:00 (PT) to find out more!
