I've been involved with startups for over 25 years. During this time I've launched six businesses in such areas as television production, IT services and competitive intelligence services. These businesses have allowed me to have offices in Winnipeg, MB, Regina, SK, Washington DC and Barcelona, Spain. I also spent 18 years as the executive director of a university entrepreneurship centre in Canada where I worked with thousands of undergraduate and graduate students and helped them create business models and presentations for for over 300 hundred ventures. These ventures were in industries ranging from medical devices to consumer packaged goods. Collectively, these ventures raised over $500 million CAD; have resulted in several exits via M&A and includes one IPO. I've also worked for the University of Texas at Austin where I was an instructor at the McCombs School of Business and served as assistant director of Texas Venture Labs. While at Texas, I worked with over a dozen student founded businesses that have gone on to raise money from angels, angel groups and major corporations. In addition, I have worked with entrepreneurs in several countries including Thailand, Philippines, France, UK, Brazil and Israel to develop their ventures. Currently I run an accelerator in Winnipeg, Canada called the Mean Eyed Cat Venture Labs where I work with ventures from across the province. These ventures are in a wide range of sectors including manufacturing, Fintech and CPG. Part of this role includes working with the associated investor group. There are 53 investors in this group and they typically invest in a dozen ideas per year at an average investment amount of $1.5 million CAD. The group is an active member of the National Angel Capital Organization (NACO) and runs the NACO Academy program in Manitoba.
