Gary Brooking is the Chair of Engineering Technology at Wichita State University (WSU). His role is to guide the applied and experiential learning focus of the program, as well as foster an entrepreneurial mindset in students. Previously with the Biomedical Engineering Department at WSU, he is involved with teaching and developing innovative student projects, translating some of these into business ventures. He has a BSc in Electrical Engineering from Cape Town University, a MS in Bio-Engineering from Clemson and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from University of Virginia. After his PhD, he lectured at a startup university in Zimbabwe where he was involved in establishing the new Electronic Engineering Department. He left academics to go into private practice where he established a number of regional start-up companies, many with students. After over ten years in private practice, he returned to academics at the University of Zimbabwe where he lectured in Electrical Engineering. During this time, he was able to build links between industry and academics which resulted in sponsored student projects some of which have grown into start-up businesses.
