Exclusive: We've learned that 9Gag has raised $2.8MM from four top VCs including True Ventures, First Round Capital, Greycroft, Freestyle, and even Dave McClure. They've been looking to raise funding on multiple trips to the valley over the past few months, but now we've learned that the round has closed. The site has 60MM monthly uniques and the round was over subscribed.
They are one of the biggest sites you've never heard much about. Founded by a small team in Hong Kong that recently moved to the Bay area, they're also the group behind Startup Quotes.
9Gag is a daily joke site similar to FailBlog or icanhascheezburger where user submitted content gets posted to a blog multiple times throughout the day. They have a heavy overlap with the Reddit crowd which drives a lot of traffic to the site. What’s more interesting is in the past 12-months the site has exploded in growth.
Their blog posts routinely get between 1000-2500 shares per post, and it's one of the funniest and most viral sites on the internet. They are serving tens of millions of monthly page views filled with advertising. Excited to see the team grow locally and expand with the new funding.
