Hiring Friends, No Mentors, And Being Greedy Lead To Mistakes in Kampala

Munyutu-WaigiAs an entrepreneur, you realize that at the end of the day, running your business is all about managing people. Key people in this equation being your team, your investors and your customers. Munyutu knows first hand what it means to manage people, he calls them Painful Mistakes.

In October Startup Grind Kampala hosted Munyutu Waigi. He is Co-Founder & General Partner at Umati Capital, Co-Founder Rupu, previously Co-Founder, Country Manager, President & Board Chair at Ringier Kenya… and previously Founder & CEO at MoComm Wireless. Chances are you don’t know much about him. He is not about the spotlight, but he definitely has a story worth spotlighting.

You could say he pretty much did everything wrong.

Here are a few of those mistakes:

- He started out with no mentors.

- He co-founded with his friends.

- He believed the line “You’d rather have a small piece in a big cake, rather than a big piece in a small cake“.

And all the above cost him, dearly.

But, an entrepreneur is no entrepreneur if they don’t rise above all the murk, clutch onto the lessons learned and go at it again. Munyutu's capacity to rise from the ashes and go on to build his next successful startup is nothing short of brilliant! More so, blessed is the entrepreneur who will do all he can to ensure the next generation of entrepreneurs avoid the exact same pitfalls.
