Technology Trends of 2014: A chat with Mark White (CTO of Deloitte)

In the world of consulting no name screams louder than Deloitte. For over 100 years Deloitte has been at the forefront when it comes to providing strategic and comprehensive services to clients worldwide. One of the people at the helm of the Deloitte powerhouse is Cheif Technology Officer Mark White. Mr. White graciously shared his insight in a recent fireside chat.

A native of Georgia and proud graduate of UGA White grew up with a business mindset thanx to his entrepreneurial parents. After college he worked at May & Company-a family business- before landing a job with Arther Anderson Consulting. During his 14 year tenure White became a partner while also creating apps on his own such as Realiem which managed investment trust for various real estate agencies. Unfortunately when Anderson collapsed White had to seek out other employment. Eventually Deloitte reached out to White forming a successful partnership.

As the overseer of Deloitte' s tech division White has 3 rules that he applies before placing a trend in the company's Tech trend report:

1. Must be business led technology enabled

2. Have an expectancy to manifest within the next 18-24 months

3. Must have 3 general market companies obliging with the trend

One of the trends brought up was CIOs acting as if they are Venture capitalists. In other words be more aware of financial decisions based upon what is represented in your portfolio. One of the examples used was the CIO of New York Life using the $20million in their portfolio to assist up and coming startups not only financially but have them become investors in the business. Also discussed Cognitive Analytics, Crowdsurfing, and Wearables which are considered some to look out for in the future months.

When asked about advice for young tech startups White' s answer was to be "Domain Relevant". This meant that when you are in the process of promoting your brand to a major firm make sure your capabilities coincide with the bigger firm's opportunities. On a lighter note White was gifted with a Silver Surfer action figure, a childhood superhero.

Generous and extremely passionate about technology it's no wonder Mark White is successful at what he does. He is definitely the epitome of what it means to be a CTO!!!
