Celebrating Moms Who Code

May 10, 2020, 6:30 – 8:30 AM

We often look up to our mothers more than anyone else in the world. We would go to them for inspiration, advice, or a shoulder to cry on. We’ll find comfort from her words and her handmade jiaozi.

We often look up to our mothers more than anyone else in the world. We would go to them for inspiration, advice, or a shoulder to cry on. We’ll find comfort from her words and her handmade jiaozi.

Yet we hear very little about their own struggles. For both stay-at-home moms and working moms, achieving a balance between the demands of a family and their career or personal growth could be a challenge without the right support.

In recent years, companies all over the world have been taking the necessary steps to eliminate the cultural stigma attached to working moms, such as implementing flexible schedules and more comprehensive maternity leave policies, promoting better workplace cultures and removing discriminatory hiring processes.

At Ladies Who Tech, we believe education is an engine to women’s empowerment and a foundation for a future of independence. We hope that through hosting workshops and events and providing support to our fellow women, companies and organizations will leave inspired to enact policy changes to be more inclusive of women and mothers!

To celebrate Mother’s Day this year, Ladies Who Tech and R-Ladies Beijing will be co-hosting an online workshop on “Mapping connections: Network analysis and visualization in R” on 10th May, Sunday. We are proud to have Hannah Rose Kirk (柯玫瑰), an expert and long-time Beijing-based researcher on behavioural economics, AI and social data science to host the introductory session on the process of gathering and analyzing data from social networks using the statistical programming language, R.

What is network analysis and why is it important?

Network analysis is a technique used to depict relationships between actors. Networks can represent much of our daily lives, like relationships of friends on Weibo, airplane flights between global cities, or messages exchanged across online dating profiles. Network analysis can be used by academics to visualize research data, or by professionals to better understand the flows and interactions in their firm.
