After playing an escape room game in Cape Town, we found the concept of escape rooms exciting and captivating. We also knew that Bloemfontein was a city that was in desperate need of fun recreational activities. We decided to start Elude Escape Rooms as a side-line project to test the idea of “escape room games”. To ensure the success of the business, we knew that we had to make the experience amazing. After months of research, design, building, and testing, we finally started the business in March 2017.
With a combined experience of playing approximately 50 escape room games (local and international) and the design, build and testing of 4 complete escape games, the experience today at Elude Escape Rooms is on par with some of the best.
Some notable clients were:
• The VKB Knights Cricket Team
• Cheetahs Rugby Team
• Munster Rugby Team
• SonderJouSoetkys Reality TV Program (airing on 23 March on channel 195)
• And most important of all, the local people in Bloem.

Hein Pretorius started his career in Civil Engineering in 2009 after completing his degree in Civil Engineering. He has been in the civil engineering industry for the past ten years and also completed his master’s degree in civil engineering recently.
Around 2010 entrepreneurship piqued his interest. The systems, constant problem-solving and variety of challenges in starting and running a business is what caught his attention and eventually turned into a passion.
Combining their respective strengths in 2017, Hein and James committed to bringing the escape room concept to Bloemfontein. Exceeding expectations, what started out as a side-line project turned into a full-fledged business that is still growing 2 years later.
Co-Owner of Elude Escape Rooms
James Honiball is a university lecturer in civil engineering. He completed a master’s degree in civil engineering and is about to complete his doctorate in the same field. He has been lecturing at the Central University of Technology for the past 6 years. 3 years ago, James played an escape room in Cape Town. Although he had a fun experience, he felt that he can create and design a better room. So straight after his escape room experience, James created an escape room in his garage for his friends to come to play. The rest is history, James teamed up with Hein Pretorius and together they designed and built Elude Escape Rooms in Bloemfontein. The rooms quickly shot up to be rated as the best escape rooms in South Africa. Apart from spending most of his time with his family and studies, James also finds himself regularly busy with designing new puzzles and ensuring Elude Escape Rooms keep delivering a fun exciting experience for everyone who comes to play.
