We are pleased to continue our annual tradition of having the final Startup Grind Calgary event of the year focus on social enterprise. This year we are honored to host fireside chats with two of the top social entrepreneurs in the country: Kevin Davies of Hop Compost and Kaylee Astle of MobSquad. Both are multi-million dollar certified B Corporations headquartered in Calgary.
Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. By harnessing the power of business, B Corps use profits and growth as a means to a greater end: positive impact for their employees, communities, and the environment.
Kevin Davies is the Founder of Hop Compost, which uses patented technology to build inner-city compost facilities. Under Kevin’s direction, Hop’s innovative service has saved more than 20 million pounds of food waste for clientele such as Starbucks. Using food waste as its primary ingredient, Hop produces a record-setting organic compost, sold across Canada by retailers such as Whole Foods. Since inception in 2015, Hop has averaged three-times annual revenue growth, and has expanded from Calgary to four Canadian cities.
Kaylee Astle is a Co-Founder and the Head of Communities of MobSquad, an innovative Calgary-based start-up that forms remote teams of high-caliber developers in Canada that are paired with US-based clients on an exclusive, long-term basis, effectively rendering the remote developers their full-time employees. MobSquad’s Canadian-based developers obtain the opportunity to work with the most compelling start-ups in the world, backed by globally recognized venture capitalists and be mentored by leading serial entrepreneurs – all from Canada.
