About this event

If you buy Free Range Chickens from WoolWorths, you are buying Elgin Free Range Chickens. Come hear Jeanne's Startup Story! In 1992 Jeanne received her Bsc.Degree in  Agriculture from the University of Stellenbosch where after she in a very short space of time, developed her father’s duck rearing business into one of the biggest suppliers of duck in the country. In 1996 after she got married, she started rearing chickens on her husband’s farm as a means to provide a healthy alternative for her family. Little did she know that this little business she started in her backyard would exceed all expectations. In 2002 a state of the art abattoir was set up in Grabouw as business was growing and in 2009, slaughtering 48 000 chickens per week at the time, Jeanne took the award for National Female Farmer of the Year for National Markets. In August 2014 Jeanne was honoured by the Department of Agriculture and this time she was awarded the Top Commercial Female Entrepreneur Award for 2014. The Department of Agriculture nominated her for the Western Cape Premier’s Female Entrepreneur of the Year and as the leader of Elgin Free Range Chickens Jeanne was a category winner in the Established Business Category and the overall winner of this Prestigeous Ward. A mere100 chickens a month grew to 80 000 plus chickens a week! Now the largest independent free range chicken operation in South Africa, Elgin Free Range Chickens provides jobs to 300 people, and with various skills development and outreach programmes in place, continues making a powerful contribution towards the economy, the community, and the drive towards being truly free range
