About this event
Entrepreneur. Philanthropist. Educator. Dreamer... Mercy Kitomari is one of the most genuine human beings you may have the good fortune to meet. Her charm is ever present and undeniable. When she talks about her passions - be they ice cream, chocolate or wildlife - you can tell there is nothing else in the world she would rather be doing. This positively intoxicating personality is embodied in the organic ice cream made by her company, Nelwa's Gelato. You can literally taste it there!
Born in Lesotho, Mercy spent her early childhood there then moved to Arusha where she completed her primary and secondary education. She later went to the United Kingdom for higher learning, which is where the ideas for an ice cream company started taking shape. After her studies, she moved back to Tanzania and started working in finance. Nelwa's Gelato was actually founded while she was still working for a banking institution.
Leveraging the power of social media and existing networks, the early days of Nelwa's Gelato were spent taking orders on weekdays and making deliveries on weekends. Eventually the company caught its first big break after landing a deal to supply Southern Sun Hotel with more ice cream than they were able to produce at the time. Today, Nelwa's Gelato has become a house hold name in Tanzania's ice cream industry. The diverse and delicious quality ice cream products they offer are successfully competing against the biggest local and international ice cream brands in our market.
Mercy Kitomari has been featured in the local Ndovu Spotlight Studio series and the international BBC's African Dream series as one of the Tanzanian entrepreneurs to look out for. In spite of this and a lot more media features and critical acclaim, she remains as humble and as authentic a personality as ever. The warm sincere smile she graces everyone in her presence makes you want to connect with her and her company's products. Nelwa's Gelato supports many local small scale fruit farmers and Mercy's love for Tanzania's natural resources has her working diligently to support wildlife conservation efforts all over the country. Just wait till you hear her talk about a herd of elephants in the African sunset!
