Nuya Hellen Dausen is the kind of entrepreneur you always want to spend a little more time with. A true free spirit, she's fun-loving, witty, curious and full of life. Her smile comes easy, and when she laughs, the world around her brightens that much more. Conversations with her are relaxed and engaging. Even before she starts telling you about her company and the amazing bath and skin care products she makes, you are totally sold on personality alone!
When talking about her company, and the products she makes, Hellen's beautiful eyes light up with excitement and she gets you totally engrossed in her company's story. The journey that brought her where she is started when she decided that world renowned model and aspiring actress wasn't all she was about. She wanted to get into industry, create jobs and change the lives of people she cared about by making amazing stuff. And with her love and passion for modelling and all things naturally beautiful, skin care was the obvious industry choice.
It has not been an easy journey. In one instance when she first started out, after making a huge investment in a soap making plant in her parents' backyard, the regulating authorities deemed it not up to their standards and instructed her to bring it down! All that capital investment gone in a single moment, before she even got started doing her thing... Not every would-be founder survives such a loss. But Nuya is as strong and resilient as she is beautiful. A few weeks later she was calling the authorities back for another inspection of a new soap making plant, and this time she made sure they could find no fault.
When you meet Hellen today, it's easy to forget that she is year 2010's Miss Universe Tanzania. She has successfully transformed herself into a formidable entrepreneur and business lady. Nuya's Essence products are so good that their early adopters keep coming back for more, and bringing lots of referred clients with them. At Dar es Salaam's Oysterbay Farmer's Market, few passers-by ever leave before they have bought something made by her. It's hard to ignore the sweet aroma of the products on her display stand. And once you have moved closer and she gets to pitch, her marketing is flawless!
