To mark our 4 year Startup Grind Dar es Salaam anniversary, we are kicking off a series of fireside chats dubbed 'The Startup Path' that walks us through the first exciting yet terrifying few months/years of building a startup, step by step.
First up, is Ona Stories, a Tanzania-based storytelling house that produces Africa-first, mobile-first, video-first content. Ona is pioneering the field of immersive storytelling in Tanzania through virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and a range of 360 visual content (360 live streaming, underwater 360, 360 drone filming and animation). Ona also works with businesses to create immersive brand messages.
Before founding Ona stories, both Tulanana and Princely, co-founders at Ona Stories had good jobs in reputable organisations that they resigned from, to build a tech startup.
Tulanana and Princely will walk us through their planning process before the decided to take The Leap of Faith into tech entrepreneurship.
Princely is the Co-founder and Director of Storytelling and Strategy at OnaStories. He is an award-winning storyteller and impact communications expert with over 7-yrs experience in leading, designing and executing world-class communications strategy in development work and in the private sector. From managing national campaigns promoting innovative M-nutrition approaches that help rural mothers give their children the best start in life, to directing Tanzania's first-ever Augmented Reality audiovisual gallery for Vodacom, Princely helps organizations find and tell impactful stories.
His experience includes stints in the private sector (leading Marketing, Communications and Design for a top-100 company), in the development world (as Brand Communications Specialist for USAID Feed the Future Advancing Youth) and within child education (as Head of Communications for a Tanzanian foundation with trusteeship in the US, New Zealand, Canada, Norway, and South Korea). As an East Africa Media Lab Fellow, he went to Somaliland to tell stories from the little-known, beautiful self-declared state. He spoke on the future of storytelling at the 1st UN-Habitat Assembly's City Stage, and has also spoken at the World Clean Up Day launch in Tanzania, the Kwanza Africa Summit among others.
Today, at OnaStories, he is pioneering the use of frontier tech like Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Mobile-first Media to tell powerful human stories that change minds, win hearts and drive organization results.
