About this event

Ken and Michele Fourie are the Founders of Wakaberry Frozen Yoghurt Bar. The couple are also born and bred Durbanites and opened their first self-serve frozen yoghurt store in Florida Road in 2011. Since then the Wakaberry brand has exploded up to 50 stores in 8 provinces.

Ken and Michele are both serial entrepreneurs having started a few restaurants and coffeeshops previously. While living overseas they noticed that frozen yoghurt bars had taken over coffee shops as the new trend in meeting spots. They saw a gap in the South African market and decided to start the concept of self-service, real frozen yoghurt in Durban. The founders funded the business without any loans or outside investment. Michele takes care of admin while Ken is the brain behind the design and concept for each store.

In 2014 Famous Brands acquired 70% shareholding of the company. Famous Brands also own Debonairs, Steers, Mugg and Bean, Milky Lane & Fishaways. Also in 2014 the International Frozen Yogurt Association awarded them in recognition of their excellence. This was the first time a yoghurt bar outside of the USA was recognised by the Association.
