Gibraltar's Insurance Sector Growth in 2022 - Highlights
Motor insurance remains the dominant sector with Gibraltar's insurers collectively exceeding a 30% market share of the UK motor insurance market for the first time. This noteworthy accomplishment affirms Gibraltar's position as a leading insurance domicile for motor insurance policies.
Whilst motor insurance remains the major sector, Gibraltar’s insurance industry has in recent years built and consolidated its position in other classes of business and activities. Today, it estimated that Gibraltar pet insurers have a collective share of the UK pet insurance market of circa 20% and Gibraltar travel insurance platforms are used to intermediate more than 30% of all travel insurance policies sold in the UK. This trend signifies the industry's ability to adapt to evolving consumer needs and demonstrates diversity within Gibraltar’s insurance sector .
Furthermore in recent years Gibraltar has attracted re-domiciliation from other jurisdictions. This move demonstrates Gibraltar's appeal as a conducive and supportive environment for insurance companies and startups seeking new growth opportunities.
A new bill later this year is set to pave the way, in response to the industry's request for greater flexibility for captive insurance, for a dual captive regime. This legislative development is a testament to the jurisdiction's commitment to fostering innovation and remaining relevant in a competitive global insurance market.

11:00 AM	Keynote	Mervyn Skeet is Director of General Insurance Policy at the ABI. Mervyn has been with the ABI for more than five years and was previously Head of Tax and London Market. Prior to joining the ABI in November 2017, Mervyn was Global Head of Tax and a Managing Director for the XL Group of companies. He has worked in the Insurance industry for more than 33 years and has significant leadership experience and knowledge of the General Insurance market. Mervyn is an expert in international tax policy and its impact on the global insurance industry and has played a leading role in positively influencing the outcomes of the OECD work on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting. Mervyn is a fellow of The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and has also held various financial positions at Chubb and the accountancy firm Moores Rowland.

4:15 PM	GFSC Presentation - Staged Application and Captive Regime	Gibraltar Financial Services Commission Presentation: An overview of the new staged approach to applications for insurance companies and Captive regimes with Monika Sookhee and Kristian Menez. Monika Sookhee is the Head of Insurance at the GFSC. In her role, Monika is responsible for driving and delivering the strategy for the authorisation and supervision of insurance companies, and identifying and managing risks that could impact the organisational objectives. Prior to her role at the GFSC, Monika was the general insurance sector lead for a Big 4 audit firm, providing audit and advisory services across financial services, with a focus on non-life insurance. Monika also sat on the audit faculty of the Gibraltar Society of Accountants. Monika is a qualified accountant with 15 years of experience and holds a degree in Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics. She is also a steering committee member of the Women’s Insurance Network in Gibraltar. Kristian Menez is a member of the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission’s (GFSC) Senior Management team and Director of Prudential Supervision, overseeing the delivery of key strategic objectives and operations for the organisation. In his role, Kristian is responsible for the authorisation and supervision of regulated banks and insurance companies and sits on the GFSC’s Regulatory and Authorisations Committee. Since starting his professional career in London in 2001, Kristian has worked with firms in the banking and insurance sectors and worked as an Audit and Consulting Partner for a Big 4 audit firm. He also served as Chair of the Technical Committees for both the Gibraltar Society of Accountants (GSA) and the Gibraltar Insurance Association (GIA).
