We have invited the Minister for some opening remarks in gratitude for the unwavering support for Startup Grind Gibraltar from day 1. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to showcase Gibraltar and it's incredible business community on a global platform. We would never have been able to achieve the recognition of this work in the US without it, it has been an incredible journey so far and he will be missed!

What are the strategic milestones and optimal timing for raising capital at different stages of your startup's growth? What factors do you need to consider? Our guest speakers, Chris Mason, Co-Founder & CEO of Orbital, and David Montegriffo, Senior Associate at Hassans International Law Firm, will share their firsthand experiences, sharing their insights into the funding strategy.

Chris Mason is the Co-founder & CEO at Orbital and brings over 25 years’ experience in payments including as CEO of Citi Commercial Cards, Citi Worldlink, and AIB Merchant Services (First Data JV).

Orbital, the London, Tallinn and Gibraltar-based traditional finance and crypto payments platform for global enterprises, has raised £5M in an oversubscribed growth round led by Golden Record Ventures, at an attractive valuation in which the founders are maintaining a large majority. Participants in the round include New Form Capital, GSRV, Psalion and Luminous Futures. 

The funding marks Orbital’s first institutional capital raise, having been bootstrapped and profitable since being founded in London in 2017. Orbital provides a range of traditional payment and global FX solutions, but where it deviates from the norm is that it also offers licensed crypto payment services, especially focusing on the business use cases for stablecoins in cross border payments.

David Montegriffo is a Senior Associate at Hassans International Law Firm Limited, working in the Corporate and Commercial Department. David specialises in corporate matters and acts as lead corporate counsel for high-profile clients across various industries in Gibraltar (Crypto/DLT, Gambling, Banking). 

David has recently authored a series of articles The Hassans Entrepreneurship Series published online and in the Gibraltar Chronicle with valuable expertise on how to navigate the business landscape. "All startups start enthusiastically but many don't make it due to poor planning and simply not appreciating the pitfalls which can result in the demise of what could have been a successful business."
