The term was first coined by Alex Lazarov from Cathay Innovation in 2017 and applies to startups such as Zoom and Grubhub, which started their journeys focusing on sustainable growth, and only looking for equity investment when strictly necessary. To put it more bluntly, it refers to startups that have the resources to cross the desert and not requiring a constant stream of investment.
