Born and raised in San Antonio, Scott Metzger started his professional career in academia as an economics professor and in the banking and oil refining industries before finding his calling in one far more flavorful: the world of craft brewing. From a homebrewer’s dream and a vow made on New Year’s Eve 2005, Freetail Brewing Co. officially opened on Black Friday 2008, becoming (at the time) San Antonio’s second operating brewery and Scott’s first completed New Year’s Resolution. Coming from a place where craft beer was (and, in many respects, still is) very much a niche product, Freetail set out to change Texas’s impressions of what beer was and could be. Freetail operated strictly as a brewpub with direct-to-consumer to-go sales until 2014, when it opened a production and distribution brewery in 2014 following a successful effort to change Texas beer laws against the will of a powerful lobby in an unlikely David and Goliath story. Today, Freetail still operates both breweries and one of San Antonio’s largest and fastest growing breweries. Scott is an experienced public speaker, both within and outside of the industry, and has served on the Board of Directors for both the state and national craft beer trade associations. As a native San Antonian with family roots dating back to the 17th century, Scott’s future goals are focused on helping the city unlock its potential to be the next great American economic powerhouse. Most importantly, Scott is pleased to go home every night to his wife and two daughters.
