September 12, 2001 — not a good day to try to sell your startup’s software to your first customer ever — a hospitality company, no less. But that’s exactly what husband and wife team Amy Pressman and Borge Hald had to do, and 14 years later, it’s a moment that remains emblematic of their dedication to Medallia’s mission — using technology to continuously improve the experiences that companies deliver to their customers. The two spent 10 years bootstrapping their SaaS startup before taking on the investment of Sequoia Capital and working closely with board members like Doug Leone and Steve Walske to scale their business. Medallia has since become one of Sequoia’s single-largest investments ever and leads the Customer Experience Management space it helped create. Join Amy and Borge as they discuss what it took to build their company into the trusted partner of some of the world’s leading brands — and a transformative workplace for its employees. Both co-founders, Borge Hald is CEO and Amy Pressman is the President of Medallia. Before Medallia, Borge led strategy and operational improvement projects for BCG, worked at Morgan Stanley and P&G, and served as a lieutenant in the Norwegian Air Force. Amy worked as a consultant at BCG, a Legislative Aide on Capitol Hill, and as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras.
