For more than 25 years, Terrance Barkan CAE has been building international trade and professional associations on a global basis. His international management career has taken him to more than 60 countries on 6 continents around the world on association strategy development projects. He has served as the Executive Director for number global and multinational organizations and was the founder of the very first truly global international association management company. Today, he focuses exclusively on helping associations build international growth strategies and business plans.
As a Certified Association Executive (CAE), Mr. Barkan has been a prolific author of articles, guidelines, original research and white papers on international association growth strategies. He has served as the Chair of the International Section Council for the American Society for Association Executives (ASAE), is a former member of the Board of the European Society of Association Executives and has been an adviser to the Chinese Federation of Industrial Economics (CFIC).
He has written “Global Growth Strategies; The International Association”, used by more associations than any other publication to help shape their international strategies and business plans. He was also selected by the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) to author their guidebook, “Business Associations for the 21st Century”. The book is used as a reference guide for CIPE employees that are working in post-conflict countries around the world to establish democratic business associations.
Mr. Barkan has also developed important, original research on how associations are approaching globalization, which business models to use and how to overcome common obstacles in new, international markets.
As an international association specialist, he has accumulated a significant body of knowledge and experience in the not-for-profit sector. He has supported the creation of new volunteer organizations, guided existing organizations, advised volunteer leadership on governance and strategy, and facilitated alliances and mergers, all with a creative and pro-active approach to client mandates.
In 2009 Mr. Barkan founded GLOBALSTRAT, a specialized consulting practice that uses a proven process based approach to developing international business plans for associations. GLOBALSTRAT provides independent, expert advice for associations on how to develop their international growth strategies and business plans. This includes helping to build internal staff capabilities to better manage their global growth business plan implementation and strategy.
