Over the past 8 weeks, this working group, comprised of business professionals, ecosystem partners, and business owners has met four times, with participation growing steadily at each session. Our discussions have primarily centered on the needs of tech startups and small to medium-sized businesses in Tulsa. This may be a better platform for organizing our efforts.
Tulsa Business Support Working Group Summary
Over the past 8 weeks, our working group has met 4 times, with participation growing steadily at each session. Our discussions have primarily centered on the needs of tech startups and small to medium-sized businesses in Tulsa.
08/27/2024 Update and Agenda:
—Darren, Peter K and Kate met prior to this meeting and discussed a framework. Customers identified were: a) Tech Startups; b) Non Tech Startups; c) Growth Stage Tech Startups; and d) Growth Stage Sm/Med Sized Businesses
-- It was also discussed that this group be an integrative and communication focused forum for both the tech community and non-tech community as cross-pollination and collaboration of both groups.
-- The final portion of this meeting will be to discuss any new developments and events...and as much as I hate to admit, maybe a slack channel or communication piece will be helpful for side discussions.
Tales from the Business World: This past Saturday, I was at the BA Farmers Market to purchase another several bottles of a delightful BBQ sauce called Dan Good BBQ Sauce. I was so happy to find his tent (he had been upgraded to a coveted prime spot) and selected two bottles of his spicy version. Much to my sadness, he announced that those were the last two bottle of Dan Good Spicy that he would make and sell. I asked him why he was closing up shop. He cited low profit margins and expensive food permitting. What could have helped him here?
Key Points of Discussion from past meetings (minutes if you will):
- Gaps in Support: Both tech startups and small businesses face significant challenges in storytelling, press relations, securing financing beyond traditional VC funding, accessing focused angel networks, and enhancing strategy, sales, and operations.
- Initiatives in Progress:
- An Oklahoma angel network is currently in development, aiming to provide more tailored support to startups.
- Startuptul.com can address some of these gaps, particularly in connecting businesses with the resources available.
- Future Plans:
- The group will continue to hold regular meetings, serving as both a check-in point and a driver of further discussion on how to fill the gaps.
- We are considering the introduction of breakout sessions to address specific industry needs and tailor support accordingly.
These meetings have been incredibly valuable in identifying the common struggles faced by our local businesses and startup ecosystem, and we are committed to fostering an environment of support and growth for both types of businesses.
Please share with anyone that would like to join.
