John Backus is the Cofounder and Managing Partner of New Atlantic Ventures (formerly DFJ New England and Draper Atlantic) which is a $304M early stage VC firm investing nationally in cyber security, mobile, ecommerce, digital media, higher education and the business of healthcare. They have helped entrepreneurs start more than 100 companies including DivX, EnerNOC (NASDAQ: ENOC), Invincea, Massive (acquired by Microsoft), Mobile365 (acquired by Sybase), Moda Operandi, Qliance, Solve Media and Stitcher Radio. Before becoming a venture capitalist, he co-founded US Order, which revolutionized online banking, went public in 1995 and was sold to Visa. John serves on the Board of Directors of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), the Center for Public Policy Innovation (CPPI), Invincea, Spotflux, PokitDok and the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation. He is Chairman Emeritus of the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) Board of Directors, has served as a technology policy adviser to Virginia governors Gilmore, Warner and McDonnell. John holds a B.A. in Economics from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
