Startup Grind Wilmington is holding its inaugural event November 28th at Goldey-Beacom College. Startup Grind Wilmington hosts events featuring successful local founders, innovators, educators and investors who share lessons learned on the road to building great companies.
The featured speaker is Sumedh Surwade, founder of Newark-based SAS Nanotechnologies. SAS recently won the Emerging Enterprise Center’s Swim with the Sharks Pitch Competition, beating out eleven other startup companies.
Surwade and SAS took home the award for its anticorrosive coating technology. The proprietary method prevents corrosion and “heals and protects” metals from corrosion caused by surface scratches and damage. Surwade developed it out of his PhD research.
Startup Grind is more than a speaking event, it's a chance to connect with like-minded entrepreneurs, innovators and creators. After the speaking portion, the stage will be open to the audience to ask for services, help with project, etc. Think of this as a town square meeting, open to everyone.

SAS Nanotechnologies is developing sustainable, smart and self-healing anticorrosive coatings that can not only prevent corrosion of metals efficiently but will also heal the metal from corrosion under scratch/extreme corrosive conditions. These anticorrosive coatings have applications in variety of industries such as oil & gas, construction, marine, architecture etc.Sumedh P. Surwade is the Founder and CEO of the company with broad experience in R&D and commercialization of specialty materials. He received his MS (2007) in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Dallas and Ph.D. (2010) in Polymer Science from University of Massachusetts Lowell. After his postdoctoral research at University of Pittsburgh (2012) and Oak Ridge National Lab (2014), he joined Fujifilm (2015) in New Castle, DE as a R&D Chemist. After gaining industrial experience at Fujifilm, he founded SAS Nanotechnologies and since then leading efforts to commercialize self-healing anticorrosive coatings. He has published a book chapter, 2 patents and more than 30 research articles in reputed international journals. He is also the recipient of prestigious R&D 100 award and UT Battelle Oak Ridge National Lab top researcher award.
