Resolutions, Goals, Objectives, Intentions, or Nothing?

The start of the year is when most people take stock of their lives and set plans for the months ahead. For some, it is all about New Year’s resolutions. Others prefer goals or objectives, focusing on long-term aspirations or actionable steps. Then there are intentions, which feel more fluid and values-driven. And let’s not forget those who choose to skip it all, embracing a “go with the flow” mindset.

Where do you fall on this spectrum? Are you a planner who thrives on structure, or do you prefer to let things unfold naturally? How do you approach growth and change in your personal or professional life?

Personally, I lean towards Objectives over resolutions or even goals. There is a nuanced difference, but that is a conversation for another day. I share two of my Objectives below that I have set for 2025. Side note: I organise my Objectives broadly across five areas, or circles, of life: Personal Growth (PG), Health, Wealth, Relationships, and Experiences.

This year, my focus includes these two big Objectives in my Relationships and Wealth circles:

Why am I sharing these with you? Because I have always believed that putting your objectives, goals, resolutions, or intentions out into the world sparks two powerful things:

  1. Accountability: It is out there now. Everyone reading this knows what I am aiming for. That makes me accountable, not just to myself, but to all of you. Thank you.

  2. Connecting the Dots: One of my favourite quotes comes from Steve Jobs (yes, I know opinions on him are mixed): “You can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards.” Every conversation, introduction, email, meeting, event, social media interaction, and opportunity in the coming year could be part of a dot that helps bring these Objectives to life.

I encourage you to think about the dots you are hoping to connect this year too.
