Fireside Chat

Don’t start a business if you aren’t really passionate about it

On 19th of September, in a warm rainy evening, Startup Grind launched its series of events in Sofia with an inspiring and deep conversation with Theodore Zahov – the founder of several IT businesses, Spectrum Net and Bioteam Software among them, and lately an investor in various businesses and (digita) media. His somewhat unusual path (not a single major failure up to now) started in an ordinary Bulgarian family without any exposure to computers or entrepreneurship. Yet, he was all about mathematics until and after university where he graduated the brand new at the time major in biotechnology. Early experience in business – dating back more than 20 years ago - started with computer repairs. The widespread at the time advance payments from customers actually helped him fund quite profitable trade operations in computer components, notably the sophisticated product of….plastic screen shields  Over time Teo tested various profitable businesses and as years passed by he gathered significant experience in software development, internet services and even real estate. Lately he invested in various projects, which he “understands”, and in media (Economedia )– the latter being regarded much more as a community service project rather than a business-for-profit venture. His different ventures exemplify his belief that seeking change and trying to estimate where the market is going to are inseparable from entrepreneurship and doing business. Another real-life insight to the startup-er: one can’t succeed without partners – i.e. people you can trust and that could do certain tasks better than you. And how do you find those trusted people? “You don’t know whom to trust. It’s a feeling. You just have to find the people you trust”, smiles Teo. In similar fashion he wrapped up on developing or preparing a business towards exit: “you just never operate it in a way to be sold:”. You do what you like in order to make people happy (although this sounds as a “cliché” but it’s the way it is). “If you aren’t really passionate about a business idea you better don’t start it”. Thank you , Teo.
