Startup Grind is a global startup community designed to educate, inspire, and connect entrepreneurs. We do so by hosting a monthly recurring event. The Barcelona chapter was granted the "Best Chapter of the Year" award in 2016, with the average assistance of +130 attendees per event, having held over 100 editions since April 2014 and helping local entrepreneurs to take their projects to the next level.
In this edition, we'll be talking about how to and not to scale up a business. A fireside chat interview to Kamran Elahian (Founder & Chairman at Global Innovation Catalyst), will be followed by a panel discussion with several scale-ups such as Travelperk, Amenitiz and Playtomic to learn from their experiences.
This event will take place at Talent Garden BCN, and it will go as follows:
1. An open mic session where any attendee is free to speak up his mind or ask for a piece of advice from the community and receive feedback.
2. A fireside chat interview to Kamran Elahian hosted by our Chapter Director Àlex Rodríguez Bacardit.
3. A panel discussion with several scale-ups to learn from their experiences. Panelists include:

Kamran is Founder and Chairman at Global Innovation Catalyst and advises various governments on the needed transition from fossil-based economies to sustainable innovation economies. In the past, as a global high-tech entrepreneur, he co-founded ten companies, had 6 exits, 3 of them were Unicorn IPOs with a total market cap of over $8B. For 15 years, he was Chairman of Global Catalyst Partners, a global VC firm ($350M under management) with investments in the U.S., Japan, China, India, Israel and Singapore. Underlying his vision for global philanthropy is the conviction that modern ICT can be instrumental in dissolving barriers between nations and bridging the social and political differences among people. This vision was reflected in Schools-Online, a nonprofit he co-founded in 1996 to connect the world, one school at a time (6400 schools in 36 countries were provided with computers and access to the Internet) and merged with Relief International in 2003. Felicia Norman-Williams or Flick, as her friends call her, is Head Of Account Management for Europe at TravelPerk, a next-generation business travel booking and management platform for companies of any size. With more than 10 years of experience in account management for a variety of companies, Felicia is well known for identifying strategic goals and expectations for a portfolio of clients, ensuring that all initiatives are tailored towards achieving Travelperk’s success.
Leading a team of globally-focused Account Managers for the past 5 years at Travelperk, Felicia works to steer each business on the path best suited to them, ensuring at the same time high levels of retention and satisfaction.
Pedro Claveria is the CEO at Playtomic, the biggest network of sport reservations in Spain. He holds a degree in Business Administration and Marketing from ESIC and a master's degree in digital marketing from Silicon Valley. He began his professional career as Business Intelligence Executive at Tuenti and throughout the years he has become reference in launching successful digital projects. Pedro was also part of the team of entrepreneurs of the German fund Rocket Internet and has been CEO of Cuponation, a world leader in e-commerce and discount coupon sites for Spain, Italy and Mexico.
Thanks to Playtomic, users can find and book courts to play padel and tennis, although more sports will be added soon. At the moment, the app has almost 5.000 affiliated clubs and more than a million active users every month.
Alexandre Guinefolleau is a serial entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Amenitiz. His passion for entrepreneurship and the tech industry, combined with a strong knowledge of the hospitality world, lead him to launch Amenitiz - the first platform that brings together and automates all the digital needs of hoteliers with, at the heart of our technology, a website-builder exclusively dedicated to the hospitality industry.
Amenitiz’s mission is to build an all-in-one platform to help owners grow and manage their properties by making attracting guests, managing bookings, and crafting exceptional experiences simple and easy.
María González heads up the Intellectual Property, Industrial Property and Digital Business department at CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo. She specialises in advising domestic and international companies on intellectual property, industrial property, copyright and technology, particularly in litigation and dispute resolution.
Moreover, she is well versed in the drafting, negotiation and termination of a wide range of IP/IT agreements (licences, trademarks, designs, software, outsourcing, distribution agreements, transfers, assignments, etc.), not to mention her expertise in advising on technology, digital transformation and data analytics in sectors such as insurtech, fintech, energy, health and wellbeing and real estate, among others.

MarsBased is a 20-people full-remote development consultancy from Barcelona specialised in web and mobile applications developed with Ruby on Rails and Javascript frameworks. Àlex runs the sales/marketing area and is in charge of communications & growth of the company. His background in consulting & development (ex-Deloitte, ex-VASS) and his international profile helps him with the technical and the business perspective. His experience with volunteering (over 5 years at ESN) have helped him to build one of the strongest communities in Barcelona through Startup Grind, events for developers, curating Startup Digest, and managing a Slack community for entrepreneurs and startups in Barcelona.
