He himself is just as international as the platform Airbnb: Merchiers speaks five languages fluently, has worked in such diverse countries as China, India, Mexico, Brazil and Sweden, and has guided well-known brands to success, including Microsoft, Nortel and Rolls-Royce. Jeroen Merchiers also knows how to put a start-up on the map. After finishing his degree in industrial engineering, the Belgian moved to Spain and set up the company Mobindus in Madrid, manufacturing software for mobile devices. Today, he invests in various start-ups und gives talks to young founders as a mentor. In 2012, Jeroen Merchiers switched to Airbnb from being COO at Groupalia, where he initially looked after the local business in Spain and Portugal as country manager. Since November 2014, he has been the general manager for the whole of Europe and Russia. Airbnb is now the world’s most successful portal for affordable home-sharing in the P2P sector, with over 2 million individual offers.
