It's something Houston is known for when it comes to diversity and deliciousness. It's usually from the restaurant door that we know about new, delicious and nourishing food locally.
Yet, food entrepreneurs can look very different.
One thing that shows up when you look at food is how Texas is uniquely positioned to create a revolution because of our geographical landscape, climate, our approach to "can do " thinking, and the vast resources available to us in a state that is pro-business.
Not only do we have plenty of customers and more diversity than almost any other state, but we also have grit. Because running a food business is TOUGH. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere...
Because Startup Grind Houston is Houston's industry neutral organization, we accept responsibility for creating doors to help you (no matter what role in the process of FOOD that you play). We also see food as a metaphor. This is why our first event of 2020 is "From Soil to Shelf," a conversation about what it takes to grow something in the soil, pull it from the earth, put it on a plate or in a package, and get it to customers' plates. Just as the ideas we have to solve the problems in our lives become something we nurture and harvest into a business, and grow to a stage where we can deliver it to the masses, a food or beverage has a life of its own, having evolved from authentic human struggle, through the challenges of scale, to the labels that line the supermarket shelves.
Food entrepreneurs will learn from established industry veterans, with an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the current conversations happening in food, sustainability, and consumer packaged goods (CPG) manufacturing. Any CPG brand will benefit from this conversation, so if you play in the spaces of beauty, health products, nutrition, supplements or other lifestyle products, this is an event you should not miss.
Consumers are also invited to join us. Besides learning how your favorite product is made and makes it to your hands, you can talk with the players in the process and give them your feedback on what is important to you as the end-user.
We will start with a short get to know each other over a few samples from local food and beverage brands.
Then we will shift into our fire-side chat with our surprise guest. The focus on how to scale a food startup.
This is where you can listen and learn about the journey from idea to delivering your experience to the consumer.
Culminating with a robust panel of experts we will release a participant each week leading up to Soil to Shelf. Each expert who has deep knowledge in their area where you, the participant (whether you are a food entrepreneur or a foodie) interacts in this lively and fertile discussion.

Mom. Innovator. Purpose-driven entrepreneur. For August, these roles have always been deeply connected, each supporting and inspiring the other. When she decided her family deserved a better dairy alternative—then, she reasoned—doesn’t every family deserve a better dairy alternative? And why stop at better, when it could be the best?
Mom. This led the clean tech industry pro and clean food advocate to turn her delectable, filler-free homemade almond product into MALK Organics: the only nationally available brand on the market made with six certified organic ingredients or less, cold-pressed to retain maximum freshness and nutrients. Of course, just like any mom on a mission, August’s work is never done; she continues to create new and delicious ways for MALK lovers everywhere to enjoy it.
MALK is more than a product—it’s a passion.
Born with a severe dairy allergy, founder August Vega spent most of her lifetime struggling to find foods that wouldn’t make her sick. Years later, when her son was born with the same allergy, that condition motivated her mission: create a better dairy alternative.
Along with August’s brother Justin Brodnax and cousin Joel Canada, Almond MALK soon became the newest member of the family—and an integral part of their lives.
As MALK grows, we too continue to grow and change. We will seek out the freshest new flavors, the most wholesome ingredients and new ways to inspire employees in our fair-wage workplace. But one thing that will never change is our passion for excellence and commitment to our customers.

In Houston, TX there lives a woman . . . . who loves playing with food and has a penchant for raw, natural foods. Her name is Patricia Greer and she is a co-founder of Central City Co-op. Every week she was faced with the dilemma of what to do with leftover organic produce from the Co-op. After donating the majority of left-overs to the S.E.A.R.C.H. Project, Stone Soup, and the Gospel Light Mission, Patricia began experimenting in her kitchen at home and soon Co-op members and class participants at Whole Foods Market were raving about the delicious and healthy crackers and cookies that were being created from the excess in her kitchen.
Patricia, having too much fun creating all kinds of different snacks was knee deep in a business creating and selling nutritious, delicious, organic snack foods. Soon Co-op member and entrepreneur Charlotte White bought a package of Spinach Curry Krackers and was so impressed with the products that she began a conversation with Patricia. The conversation turned into a friendship and partnership and the rest of the story is up to you!
With deep, heartfelt gratitude for life and it’s bounty, Pat Greer’s Kitchen invites all to practice harmony through every action and intention.
From Blue Marble Marketing’s New Company Watch List:
“Patricia Greer was faced with boxes of left-over produce from her organic produce co-op in Houston. Never one to waste, she started creating raw-food crackers from that produce and selling them at the co-op. They were a hit, and one smitten customer even joined Patricia to grow the business. How’s that for dialoguing with a customer?”
From John Fain, Owner, A Moveable Feast Health Food Store and Restaurant, Houston, Texas:
“These krackers are unique, they need to be out there…there’s nothing else like them on the market.”
Pat Greer's Kitchen is happily supplying Houston with delicious, plant-based meals, desserts, and snacks. FUN, Full meals, salads, desserts, and snacks are available in the Kracker House (Our Montrose storefront) and prepared foods are also available at other retail outlets* in Houston and Killeen. Pizza, Garden Burgers, Texas Pecan Pie, Choco-LOT Fudge,..we have it for You.
We feature locally sourced foods and strive to complement every farmer’s produce (or product) with recipes to bring out fresh, full flavors.
