James Herbert has been CEO of Neogen Corporation since 1982 when he was one of the company’s founders. Neogen is a publicly held company focused on the development, manufacturing, and marketing of products for food and animal safety. Headquartered in Lansing, Michigan, Neogen markets its products to over 100 countries and has operations in Scotland, Brazil, Mexico, China, and India. Revenues for its 2015 fiscal year were approximately $283 million. Five times Fortune Magazine has named Neogen one of the 100 fastest growing small public companies in America. Forbes Magazine has repeatedly named Neogen one of the 200 best small public companies in the U.S. Neogen Europe Ltd, headquartered in Ayr, Scotland is a recipient of the prestigious Queens Export Award.
Mr. Herbert has been an officer or member of the Board of Directors in more than 30 corporations during his career. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Tennessee, and completed advanced studies at Emory University and Harvard. He has received honorary PhD degrees from Michigan State University and Queen’s University Belfast, Ireland. He was named as a Global Scot in 2005 and has been active in economic development activities for Scotland.
Mr. Herbert was born in 1940 in Memphis, Tennessee, and grew up on family cotton and cattle farms. He continues a direct interest in agriculture production as the owner of Bar-H Ranches, a commercial beef cattle producer in the Texas hill country near Hamilton, Texas.
