Personio was founded in 2015 by Ignaz Forstmeier, Roman Schumacher, Arseniy Vershinin and Hanno Renner. A short time later, the team was complemented by Jonas Rieke. They got to know each other while studying together at the Center for Digital Technology & Management in Munich. They successfully launched in 2015 with a minimum viable product of the software and were able to finance themselves for about a year.
In July 2016, they received their first round of financing. Thereafter, the company grew to nearly 50 employees and several hundred customers by the beginning of 2017. In August 2017, Personio completed a second round of financing, called Series A, for $12 million. They have grown further with this. In January 2019, they raised additional capital of $40 million through a successful Series B round of financing, notably with Index Ventures on board.
The team has grown to over 210 employees from 30 nations at two locations - Munich and Madrid. More than 1,500 customers already use their HR operating system in more than 35 countries.

Roman has started his entrepreneurial career with building websites for small businesses during high school.
Following this interest, he studied Media Informatics with focus in human-computer interaction in Munich and at UC Berkeley. His studies were complemented with a Technology Management Degree from CDTM.
Prior to Personio, Roman worked for early-phase Startups like Westwing and Foodora.
In his role as CPO he is leading the product management efforts by driving Personio’s product vision of becoming a holistic HR platform and establishing Personio as industry standard for HR software.
