If you are in China, you would have noticed a lot of your friends' profile pictures have been replaces cartoon, images, it's this app and Lie Guo's team to blame. The app has been downloaded a stunning 25 million times up to June 13, 2014. making it the top/fastest rising free app in all Chinese app markets. It is also the top-ranked app in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and one of the most popular apps in other countries including US and Australia. We will have a one-hour interview with Mr. Lie Guo at 3W Coffee between the two Startup Grind networking hours. You need to know this will be one of his last interviews to the public, since he just announced MYOtee脸萌’s team will not accept any more new interview requests. 12 months ago Lie Guo participated in Startup Weekend, a grass-root global event that lets people build their startup teams and products within a weekend and compete against other teams, in Shenzhen, China. The team during that weekend presented an app that would combine sound with Emojis, but the app didn't take off. But during that weekend Lie did make three friends who later became his core team members developing a new app as well as an investor who will help his team to make China’s next top app. The new app is called MYOtee脸萌, which came to market 6 months ago, but didn’t go viral until the end of May. The purpose of this app is to create a cute/funny avatar of your own or others. You can choose a male, female or dual characters mode to start with and you can customize the details by choosing templates provided in the app, like facial expressions including nose and eyes, and accessories like hats and stuff you'd like to put on your character's hands. You can also add a background and speech bubbles with templates like "5 days a week, I just don't feel like going to work". So in the end you get something like these: Lie Guo was a product manager at Tencent and he quit his job at the end of 2013 without taking his bonus after decided to start his own start-up. Most of his 9-member team (All product people, 0 marketing person) belong to the Post-90 generation, and most of them are big fans of a cartoon called "One Piece", which is about pirates with super powers and their adventures. MYOtee’s adventure started to get more exciting when IDG invested millions of RMB as angel investment to the company at the beginning of this year. Now they are talking with people for Series-A funding with investors coming from all over China knocking on the apartment door of their current office space.
