On October 17, Shenzhen hosts a dynamic meetup with David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of Ruby on Rails, exploring AI's impact on software development. Attendees can collaborate on Omarchy installations, join discussions on AI in development, and engage in community demos. This event is ideal for developers eager to learn about evolving tools and methods. Sign up via Luma for a chance to join.
🤖On 17 October, Omarchy and the creator of Ruby on Rails David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH)will arrive in Shenzhen to meet local developers.
This is not a speech-only event.
From afternoon until evening, we’ll work together to install…Omarchy、Explore development environments, watch Lightning Demos presented by community members, and have face–to–face discussions with DHH:As Coding Agents become increasingly involved in software development, what changes are occurring in developers’ tools, work methods, and the relationship between people and computers?
Bring your computer, and bring what you're working on. Haven't touched Omarchy yet. Also welcome to the site and have a look.
✨Of course, don’t forget to come hereto make friends, start conversations, and gain energy.
DHH stands for Ruby on Rails, the creator of Omarchy, and also 37 signals co–founder and CTO.
He once transformed the way a generation of Internet developers built web products. Today, DHH is exploring another question: as Coding Agents begin to take on more and more coding tasks, do we also need a development environment that is better suited to the AI era?
During this year’s Rails World conference, DHH announced that 37 signals had decided to “put down the pencil” when it comes to writing code by hand on a daily basis (Pencils Down). This does not mean stopping software creation—instead, it means handing over more specific coding tasks to agents so that developers can focus their energy on problems, design, decision–making, and the final product.
On October 17, we want to take this discussion to Shenzhen.
What tasks are appropriate for agents? Where does human experience still need to be found? Where should developers spend their time next, when the share of handwritten code is decreasing?
You can come to the scene with your own practice or with a different opinion.
Omarchy stems from DHH’s reorganization of a typical development environment.
In 2024, he launched Omakub — a Ubuntu–based solution that packages the tools and configurations he had chosen—to help developers get started more easily. Linux。Later, he switched to Arch Linux and the Hyprland tiling window manager, and evolved this work environment into Omarchy.
The "Oma" in "Omarchy" comes from the Japanese "Omakase" - given to the chef to choose.
Its approach is straightforward: first, it selects appropriate basic tools for users, sets up their desktop and development environment, and enables them to begin working as quickly as possible. From then on, users could still continue making changes according to their own preferences.
Omarchy defines itself as a set of Agentic OS. It does not simply add a chat window to an operating system—instead, it seeks to allow the Agent to become part of a computer’s everyday usage.
Developers can access tools such as Claude Code, Codex, and Open Code to allow agents to help analyze problems, adjust desktops, write plugins, develop applications, and transform workflows. Linux’s open source code, command lines, and text–based configurations also make it possible for humans and agents to jointly modify a computer.
This is also what DHH called “malleable computers”: users come up with ideas, agents help bring those ideas to life, and then people test, evaluate, and refine them.
🕓16: 00 - 18: 00 · Hai Liaofang
Bring a laptop and power supply to install, configure and experience Omarchy with the field aspirants.
On site, we’ll have 10 community volunteers with installation experience to provide assistance—and we’ve also prepared Omarchy custom USB drives and stickers.
If you are already using Omarchy, you are welcome to bring your own configurations, plugins and works. If you haven't already, you can also come to see how others use it, exchange experiences in migrating to Linux, or meet friends who are willing to help you get started.
Please make these preparations before you come.
Back up important data in your computer in advance;
Bring your own computer, power supply and necessary switching equipment;
Priority is given to using an old computer or a spare computer;
A full disk installation may erase the original data from the selected disk;
If you want to keep Windows or macOS, please confirm the experience with the aspirant first;
When you are not sure whether the device is compatible, you can send the computer model, chip and system version in advance in WeChat.
Assistance will be provided on site depending on the model and preparation, but there is no guarantee that every piece of equipment will be installed on the same day.
What computer can participate?
Intel / AMD Windows
You can try to install it directly, but you still need to check hardware compatibility such as the graphics card, wireless network card and so on. Users who want to retain the original system can also understand the Windows virtual machine experience offered by the official website.
Intel chip Mac
There is official installation support, but different years and models of different degrees of compatibility, sound, Touch Bar and other functions may be limited.
Apple Silicon Mac (M Series)
Welcome to bringing an experience. It is recommended to run the macOS virtual machine through TryOarchy and retain the original system. Some models of M1 and M2 have an installation plan based on Asahi, which needs to be confirmed by machine, and cannot directly use the ordinary PC installation disk.
ARM Windows PC
Please inform us in advance of the device and chip model in the WeChat group and volunteers will assist in confirming it.
You can participate without a computer. Installing machinery is just one way to get into this activity.
